Help! I Found A Wasp Nest On My Suffolk Property!

October 15, 2021

With warmer weather drawing to a close and autumn finally settling in, you may think your Suffolk property is safe from stinging insects like wasps, but that's not always the case. Throughout the fall season, wasps hurry to make their nests suitable for overwintering, a type of hibernation required by most insects to survive until spring. If cold weather has set in, the overwintering process has already begun, making fully-populated dormant nests appear empty and abandoned. Disturbing a seemingly abandoned nest could be one of the worst mistakes to make this season.

Wasps Commonly Found Overwintering Around Suffolk Neighborhoods

You may be surprised to learn that not all species of wasps live in colonies; in fact, some of the most common wasps seen around Suffolk neighborhoods are solitary wasps:

  • Mud daubers – one inch in length, thin thread-like waist, coloring ranges between black, black and yellow, or metallic blue; solitary nests are mud tubes found on mostly flat surfaces and walls

  • Cicada killers – 1 ½ inch long, they have black, yellow, and orange markings with amber-colored wings; solitary nests are built underground

For the most part, though, the wasps you'll see around Suffolk properties are social wasps who live in colonies. Depending on the species, it may be a bit difficult to find where they're nesting:

  • Yellowjackets – ½ to 1 inch long, black and yellow striped; build large nests underground, in hollow trees, and wall voids

  • Paper wasps – ¾ to 1 ½ inch long, coloring varies between black, black, and yellow striped, and reddish-brown; nests are built in aerial locations out of paper-like material.

  • Bald-faced hornets – around ½ of an inch long, black bodies with white to pale yellow markings; nests are built in aerial locations out of paper-like material.

Overwintering nests tend to be much smaller in size than their spring and summer nests, mainly because the sole focus is on making sure the queen survives. A few worker wasps will overwinter with the queen, but their purpose is to make sure she stays warm while she waits out the cold weather, and they rarely ever survive till spring.

The Dangers Of DIY Wasp Extermination

The internet is filled with all kinds of DIY extermination tips, but if you don't have proper training or safety equipment, a lot can go wrong in a concise amount of time. Even though these insects are incredibly beneficial to the environment, they're still dangerous pests, and botched extermination could lead to a painful trip to the ER. Unlike bees, wasps can and will sting multiple times to get their point across, but people still insist on trying these hazardous nest removal methods:

  • Nest drowning with a cloth bag and a bowl of water

  • Essential oil and vinegar sprays

  • Soap and hot water drowning for ground nests

  • Sugar and vinegar water traps

  • Nighttime nest removal with a trash bag for aerial tree limb nests

  • Early morning or late evening extermination with wasp spray
