How To Keep Ticks Away From Your Suffolk Property

August 13, 2021

If there are pests around your Suffolk home or business that suck blood, know that you’re facing a medically dangerous intruder. These kinds of critters are a threat because they usually have both animal and human hosts. It’s a great possibility that diseases will be transmitted. Since the bugs are typically small and can bite you without causing pain, you may not see them. Lesions, skin inflammation, and/or welts are sometimes the only clue you’ll have.

Ticks are bugs that withdraw blood and they can pass on illnesses. Managing them is not an easy feat. It’s imperative that you learn about prevalent species in the area. That way, you’ll have an idea of how to combat them. HomeTown Pest Control can assist in this effort.

What Ticks Are Common In Suffolk & What Are The Risks?

Deer and American dog ticks are rampant in the region. Deer ticks live up to their name because those are the type of animals and livestock they chase. However, they won’t turn down the fluid of humans and domestic pets. They have four pairs of dark legs, hence their alternate title of “black-legged ticks.” Their reddish-brown bodies are 0.14 to 0.20 of an inch long, but the females swell to 0.39 of an inch post-feast. Remember that these pests have the Lyme disease bacterium, should you be bitten.

American dog ticks also have a secondary name; they’re occasionally called “wood ticks.” Eight legs surround their reddish-brown figures. Most are about 0.20 of an inch long. When the females feed, their bodies will expand to 0.59 of an inch.

Here are some other important things you need to know about ticks:

  • Outside Is Where They’ll Be: Humid spaces with plenty of shade and animal life attract ticks. If you’re in a grassy or woody area, keep your eyes open. Your lawn is no exception. These critters can attach themselves to you or your pet quickly.

  • Bites Can Be Crucial: If you start to feel ill after a tick bite, seek medical attention immediately. Major symptoms include breathing complications, headaches, weakness, nausea, or fever. Fine point tweezers are best for removal. Avoid squeezing, puncturing, twisting, or jerking the body.

  • The Diseases Are Significant: Ehrlichiosis, tularemia, and the Heartland virus are among the conditions ticks spread. Fatal illnesses are also a possibility.

How Can You Prevent Ticks?

Increasing or improving your exterior maintenance practices and animal care will help you stay ahead of tick invasions. Being more mindful in natural environments is useful as well:

  • Regularly trim grass and greenery. Remove organic debris.

  • Before going outdoors, use tick repellent products.

  • Wear long socks with boots in tick-dense zones. Put on pants and a long-sleeved shirt too.

  • Look over your clothes and skin after being outside. Examine your pet’s hair in addition.

  • Talk about tick control and treatments for your animals with a veterinarian.

  • Groom and clean land animals and pets on a routine basis.

  • Contact HomeTown Pest Control if you have critters ticks could target, such as squirrels.
