What You Should Know If You Spot Carpenter Ants Around Your Norfolk Property

November 13, 2020

One pest that every property owner wants to avoid in Norfolk is the ant. More specifically, carpenter ants. This breed of ant gets its name from how they behave. In building their nest, they will excavate the wood of a house or building to form smooth tunnels inside the wood. Unlike termites, this pest doesn't actually eat the wood.

Carpenter ants vary in size, but they can grow up to 5/8" long. Most often, they are black or red in color, or a combination. They can be further identified by their segmented, oval body and six legs.

How Bad Is The Damage?

While carpenter ants may not eat the wood, they do still damage the wood of a building as a result of their nest building. Once they gain entry, they represent a significant threat to your property. The one good thing about carpenter ants is they don't cause as much damage as termites do, which translates to having more time to correct the problem.

However, carpenter ants can go unnoticed for a long time, making it difficult to determine how severe the infestation has become. In addition, they are known to forage for food. This can lead to food contamination causing additional health problems on top of structural damage.

Determining If You Have An Infestation

Fortunately, unlike some other pests, it doesn't mean you have an infestation on your hands just because you find one on the premise. However, spotting one means it's time to have an inspection done just to make sure you don't have an infestation developing.

With carpenter ants, the only external sign you'll see beyond swarmers or worker ants are small openings on the surface of the wood. If you see an accumulation of sawdust-like shavings near a hole in the wood, it's a possibility you have an infestation on hand.

Carpenter ants prefer wood that has been compromised by fungus or moisture. If you have potential water damage in your home or rotting wood, then you're more susceptible to carpenter ant infestations.

No More Carpenter Ants with Hometown Pest Control

Since 2011, our team has been there for the residents of the Norfolk area when it comes to keeping pests out and away from their residential property. We focus on delivering the best quality possible for home pest control through the use of three steps, which are as follows:

  • Thorough Inspections: It all begins with the inspection. This is performed as a whole-house inspection so you can get an accurate picture of exactly what is wrong and what kind of pest you are dealing with.

  • Quality Treatments: Our treatments cover any pest that crawls including carpenter ants, among others. We will treat the exterior of your home and also spray the perimeter. Inside the home, we will set up a barrier to keep the pests out.

  • Follow-Up Visits: This includes refilling bait boxes and re-treating any hot spots such as the kitchen, bathroom, and other popular sources of food and water. With carpenter ants, we will  also inspect the premises for any signs of wood damage to ensure nothing is missed.
