Fun Facts: Who Is Tricia?

I’ve lived in a few different places—I was born in Hawaii, moved to Oklahoma, and now I call Currituck home. I love to travel, and one of my favorite things to do is snow skiing. So if you don't get hold of me, I'm probably jet-setting somewhere exotic.

We threw a few fun "would you rather" questions her way, and here’s how she answered:

Home-cooked meal or restaurant?

Definitely home-cooked. There’s something about a good meal at home that just can’t be beat.

Netflix or video games?

I'm a Netflix girl all the way.

Beach or mountains?

Depends on the time of year! I love a perfectly gorgeous beach in the summer and the mountains in the winter, especially if I can hit the slopes.

Summer or winter?

I actually love both, but if I had to pick, I’d say summer.

When we got down to pest talk, Tricia had strong opinions:

Cockroaches or rodents?

Rodents, hands down. According to her, they’re much easier and quicker for techs to handle.

Recurring customer vs. brand-new signup?

She’d rather reschedule a recurring customer. It’s faster, which helps during high-call times, and she loves catching up with the customers she’s built strong relationships with. That being said she gets excited when new customers come on board as it gives her new relationships to build.

If you could be any bug, What would you be?

I’d be a black widow spider. I like that they can crawl around and hide in small spaces—they're kind of mysterious. Plus, I think they’re a little bouji with that red mark, and I’m here for it.

If you had Three Wishes From a Genie, What Would They be?

1. Better health.

Hey there, pest friends! We’re back today to cover the different types of bees common in our region. We will also give you some key characteristics to help identify different types of bees you may come across.

Bees live in two different types of social structures: social and solitary. We see both types here in our area. With this overview, we hope to help you identify the next bee you see.

Knowing the types of bees helps us decide what to do before sending one of our technicians your way.

Nesting sites are typically built wherever the bees will spend most of their lives. That may be close to flowering plants where they will collect pollen and nectar or in wooden structures where they will develop into adults.

Social Bees

Social bees live in large colonies, usually with a single reproductive female known as the queen bee. The colonies are highly organized, with each bee having a specific job to do for the greater good of the group. This category of bees divides the labor of maintaining the hive, producing the offspring, and raising offspring clearly.

Once the Queen has established a nest, she is solely responsible for laying eggs. The first generation of daughters will take over foraging and brood rearing.

Social bee species are expert builders. They create nests and hives out of wax they secrete from their own bodies. Each nest is designed for maximum efficiency in storage, brood rearing, and even defense.

Communication is crucial to maintaining order in large colonies of social bee types. Social bees use several means of communication, such as pheromones, dances, and vibrations.

Different Social Bee Types We See

Honeybees:

The most important organism on our planet is the honeybee. As a pest control company, we will not exterminate honeybee nests. When we’re called to a honeybee colony, we call local beekeepers to move the nest safely to a better place.

Active Period: Honeybees are active all year round but are most active in June.

Bumblebees:

Bumblebees are one of the many bee varieties found in North America, and they have fascinating characteristics. Bumblebees will find nests in rodent burrows, birdhouses, and even patches of tall, thick grass.

Identification:

Size : ½” to 1” in length for workers, but the queen is larger.

Color: Bumblebees are black with a yellow to ivory upper body.

Body: Bumblebees are robust, with fuzzy bodies. The thorax is broad and round, with powerful flight muscles to keep their fat bodies in the air.

Pollen Collection: Like honeybees, bumblebees have a pollen basket on their hind legs. Interestingly, bumblebees use “buzz pollination,” which means they use vibration to remove and collect pollen.

Active Period: Bumblebees are active from March to December. They are most active during June, July, and August.

Sweat Bees:

Sweat bees are socially diverse within their nests. Because there are over 500 known species of sweat bees alone, it can be hard to identify them. Sweat bees don’t typically seek out humans to drink their sweat, but will sometimes because they are attracted to the salt.

Identification:

Size : Small to medium size bees, ½” on average.

Color: These bees come in a wide variety of colors, including metallic blues and greens and sometimes black or brown.

Body: Sweat bees have a slender body and are typically pretty shiny. In comparison to their bodies, their antennae and wings are long. Fine hairs cover their body.

Pollen Collection: Pollen is collected to feed their larvae. Instead of a pollen basket, Sweat bees have a dense patch of hair on their hind legs used to collect and hold pollen.

Active Period: Sweat bees are active from March to December, with exceptionally active periods in June, July, and October.

Solitary Bees

Solitary bees are a diverse group of bees. Their solitary lifestyle gives them distinct characteristics and behaviors, unlike that of their social cousins. As the name suggests, these different species of bees spend their lives alone instead of in colonies.

The female bees are solely responsible for building their nests, laying their eggs, and providing a food source for the brood cells.

Depending on the type of bee, you may find its nest in soil, hollow plant stems, rock crevices, wooded boards, or even other insects abandoned burrows.

Solitary bees have a limited lifespan compared to social bees. Adults of this social type emerge in the spring or summer, mate, lay eggs, and die within a few weeks.

Different Kinds of Solitary Bees We See:

While there are numerous different kinds of bees that are solitary, today we are just going to identify two of the most common we see.

Carpenter Bees:

Carpenter bees are are also know to excavate, but instead of soil, they go for wood. They prefer soft, unpained, or weathered wood like dead branches, fence posts, or decks. Carpernter bee females chew distinct circular holes and tunnel inside to create galleries to lay eggs and store pollen.

Identification:

Size : Carpenter bees are large in size, averaging about 1”

Color: These bees are often black or metallic blue-green. They have mostly hairless bodies with shiny exoskeletons. They may have yellow or white faces.

Body: Carpenters bees are robust, with fat oval bodies. Their wings are translucent but may have a smoky appearance.

Pollen Collection: Like mining bees, pollen is the primary source of protein for these bees. Their hind legs are specifically designed for pollen collection. The hairs brush against the pollen on flowers and remain there until they’re back in the nest.

Active Period: Carpenter bees are active from March through October. You will see the most activity when the weather breaks from the cold of winter to the warmth of spring.

Mining Bees:

Mining bees are also known expert excavators. The female bee will dig tunnels and burrows, often in sandy and well-draining soil, to build chambers for laying eggs and storing nectar and pollen for their larvae. True to their solitary ways, these nesting habits are done all alone.

Identification:

Size : Small to medium size bees, ½” on average.

Color: When trying to identify bees of this species, look for various shades of black, brown, or gray with bands or patches of color on their bodies.

Body: Mining bees are slender and a bit fuzzy. Their bodies are elongated with well-defined segments.

Pollen Collection: Pollen is the primary source of protein for these bees. Like other bees, the hind legs of Mining bees are specifically designed for pollen collection. The hairs brush against the pollen on flowers and remain there until they’re back in the nest.

Active Period: Mining bees have a long active period from February to October. March, April, and May are the most active periods.

Hey there, pest connaisseurs. I'm so glad to have you back! Now that spring has sprung, all the little critters are out to play. Today, we’re going to start on our common roach series. First up… the American roach .

If you haven’t heard the name “American cockroach,” you’ve undoubtedly heard of a water or palmetto bug. Over the years, people have given this big, ugly roach a few cutesy names. American roaches are the largest house-infesting roach of the species of cockroaches in our area.

How To Identify an American Roach

American cockroaches are typically reddish-brown with a figure 8 pattern on the back of the head. They average about 1.5 inches but can grow to more than 2 inches long.

Males and females are almost entirely identical. If you are curious enough to get down and inspect one, you’ll find a pair of fully developed wings.

The male's wings extend past the abdomen by 4-8 millimeters. A female's wings end almost evenly with their abdomen. Speaking of females, they are a bit more round around the middle.

These large roaches have six legs equipped with various sensory organs that allow them to navigate their world easily. Their long, slender legs are built for speed. Through years of adaptation, their legs will enable them to cover a lot of ground fast. This helps them get to safe grounds when they think danger is present.

The Life Cycle

Even though the American cockroach population seems to multiply quickly, the journey from egg capsule to adulthood can take almost two years. Once the roach has fully matured, it can live for another 400 days.

Egg Stage: Building the Nursery

First comes the egg, snugly wrapped in a protective case called an ootheca. Mama roach takes great care, carrying this capsule around for a few days before carefully placing it in a hidden spot, secured with her own saliva. Inside each case, there are about 14 tiny embryos waiting to hatch in about a month.

Nymphs: Growing Up Days

The next stage is the nymph phase, which is like their teenage years. This lasts several months, and this is when they undergo remarkable changes. They shed their old skins every so often, about every week or so, to accommodate their growing bodies. This process, called molting, is like shedding old clothes to make room for new ones.

Adulting: Wings and All

Finally, after several molts, they emerge as fully-fledged adults, complete with wings. Now, they're ready to tackle the world and, well, reproduce. They scurry around, looking for food and water, and within a few days, they're all set to start the cycle anew.

The Circle of Life

Every female roach can lay eggs, whether they've found a mate or not. But those who've found love lay eggs more frequently, about every four days. Their offspring have a better chance of survival when living in groups, especially if their mama is single.

The Bottom Line

Remember, these critters can live for about a year, and a single female can produce up to 15 egg cases in her lifetime. So, it's essential to keep them in check with regular pest control.

Did I Just See an American Roach Flying?!

Well, yes and no. American cockroaches have fully developed wings capable of flying, but they mostly use them to glide through the air after jumping or pushing off a surface.

How Long Does a Mosquito Live?

Welcome back, pest pals! Previously, we talked all about mosquito treatments. This time, let's go through the lifecycle and the potential diseases mosquitoes can carry.

North Carolina and Virginia host over 60 species of mosquitos. Our region sees the Asian tiger mosquito the most. In the mid-1980s, importers introduced Asian tiger mosquitos to America through used tires from Northern Asia.

What Do Mosquitos Look Like?

First, we want you to be able to recognize an Asian tiger mosquito. Each of the four life stages has a distinct look that, once you are familiar with, you'll be able to pick them out easily. Only 7 to 10 days stand between the day a female lays her eggs and the emergence of the next generation in the mosquito population.

Stage 1: Mosquito Egg

In our region, mosquitos can overwinter for up to 8 months. Mosquitos lay their eggs just above the waterline in water-holding containers. If you see a patch of rice-like eggs, you've got the next generation of bloodsuckers waiting for the next rain.

Once the eggs are submerged in rainwater, they hatch into mosquito larvae. Mosquitoes need only about an eighth of an inch of water to complete the lifecycle, and sometimes, it can take a couple of submersions for the eggs to hatch.

Stage 2: Mosquito Larvae

After hatching, mosquito larvae will continue to develop in water. Because they constantly wiggle, larvae are easy to spot in stagnant water.

In the larvae stage, mosquitos are active feeders. They feed on fine organic matter in the water, such as decaying leaves or pollen. While still in the larvae stage, they will come to the surface every now and then to breathe using their breathing siphon.

In as little as five days, the larvae are ready to transform into the last stage before becoming fully developed adults.

Stage 3: Mosquito Pupa

During the pupal stage, mosquitos no longer feed but are still extremely active. You can tell the pupa apart from the larvae because the pupa is darker in color and resembles a comma or a tiny shrimp. The pupa stage is the shortest in the mosquito lifecycle. Pupa are ready to emerge from the water as an adult, flying mosquitos in 2 to 3 days.

Stage 4: Adult Mosquito

Adult Asian tiger mosquitos are among the most distinctive insects in our area. The easiest way to identify them is by the all-black body with strong white stripes on their legs and the single white or silver strip from the head down to the center of their back. Females are generally larger than their male counterparts.

As soon as females emerge from the water, they hunt for a blood meal, which is essential to egg production. The female uses the proteins in the blood to nourish her eggs before she finds a nice spot to start the cycle again. Every three to four days she is on the hunt again. Asian tiger mosquitos are considered domestic insects, which means they will only fly about 500 yards from their breeding sight.

How Long Do Mosquitos Live?

The mosquito lifespan is fairly short. On average, an adult mosquito only lives for 21 days. If you include the water stages the entire lifespan is about 31 days. One female will lay about 500 eggs in her life. In the USA, mosquitos are a public health issue because of their breeding habits and ability to spread diseases.

One small plus side is only half of the mosquito population spreads diseases. Male mosquitos don't bite and don't feed on blood. Males feed on plant juices and nectar rather than blood feeding.

What Diseases Do Asian Tiger Mosquitoes Carry?

The scary side of mosquitos, by far, is the dangerous and debilitating diseases they are able to spread to humans and animals. Professional mosquito control and personal protection measures are essential to stopping the spread of these ailments:

Once the female has laid her eggs, it takes 7 to 10 for the adult to emerge during the warm, active months. There are four stages in the development of a mosquito: egg, larvae, pupa, and adult. Female mosquitos lay their eggs just above the water line on the walls of anything that holds water. These eggs can survive the winter for up to 8 months in our region.

When the water covers the eggs, they hatch into larvae. Larvae are easy to spot with the naked eye because you will see them wriggling in the water. The larval stage is about 5 days long before developing into pupa.

Pupa live in water as well and develop into adult flying mosquitos in 2 to 3 days. Female adult mosquitos emerge and hunt for their first blood meal to start the cycle all over again. They repeat this process every three days, feeding and then laying eggs. Male mosquitos don’t feed on blood. Instead, they consume nectar and plant juices. The mosquitos we see in this area do not fly very far from their breeding site, typically only traveling at most about 500 yards.
