What are mosquitoes?
Mosquitoes are fly-like insects and are found living throughout most of the world. Adults have slender bodies, long legs, and narrow wings that are covered in fine hair. They also have an extended mouthpart (proboscis) that they use for feeding. Female mosquitoes feed on the blood of people and animals in order to get the protein required to create eggs. Males and females use their proboscis to feed on nectar and pollen - their main food source. Mosquito larvae have large heads, large thoraxes, and worm-like abdomens.
Are mosquitoes dangerous?
Mosquitoes are dangerous pests. In the United States, mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting serious diseases like West Nile virus, encephalitis, and the Zika virus. They also infect dogs with potentially fatal parasitic heartworms. In developing and tropical countries, mosquitoes spread deadly and debilitating diseases like malaria, yellow fever, and dengue fever. Due to the significant diseases they spread, they rank among the world’s most deadly animals.
Why do I have a mosquito problem?
Mosquitoes live and breed outside, and have the potential to become a problem on any property. Properties that offer easy access to standing water (breeding sites) and plentiful flowering vegetation to feed on are attractive to mosquitoes. Ornamental ponds, lakes, marshes, wading pools, drainage ditches, and containers that can collect water are common mosquito breeding sites. Gardens and flowering trees are common places where mosquitoes forage for food.
Where will I find mosquitoes?
Mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn, swarming around areas of standing water or food sources. During the middle of the day, when the temperature is hottest, mosquitoes rest in tall grasses, areas of dense vegetation, along fence lines, under tree lines, and underneath decks and porches. Mosquitoes sometimes find their way inside while searching for food. They move inside through tears in screens or spaces around windows and doors.
